"In many ways," Robert J.C. Young writes, "colonization from the very first carried with it the seeds of its own destruction." Imperial Affliction examines some ways in which Young's observation could be applied to problems of subjectivity and influence within the colonizing nations themselves, particularly eighteenth-century Britain. How might these "seeds of destruction" manifest themselves as problems of identity? How might the very selves with greatest access to self-affirmation---the idea of the empire, the idea of British citizenry, the idea of the British self---actually find themselves vulnerable, confused, or damaged? Using multiple forms of postcolonial critique, this book turns back to salient eighteenth-century British lives and work for a different kind of enlightenment. Among its central subjects are the elusive subjectivity of William Collins; the exilic religious experience of William Cowper and its multiple readings in the twentieth century by a self-fashioned exilic, Donald Davie; the "missed encounter" between Christopher Smart and Samuel Johnson, and the ways in which that problem was re-inscribed in the work of W. Jackson Bate and Lionel Trilling; the problem of imperial fixity in James Cook's journals with a view to Gray's "Elegy" and Gold-smith's "Deserted Village"; and the problem of purity as a paradoxically privileged and exilic force in the work of John Newton and Christopher Smart. In these explorations, this book illustrates both an expanded view of eighteenth-century colonial liabilities and a new emphasis on postcolonial critique as a means of exploring the fissures always present in imperial ambition.

Download 55 An Imperial Affliction 55 Poems Of Emily Dickinson 1830 1886 books,

Nerdfighteria, a first-of-its-kind online literary community with nearly three million members, challenges these assumptions. It is the brainchild of brothers Hank and John Green, who provide literary themed programming on their website and YouTube channel, including video clips from John, a best-selling author most famous for his young adult book, The Fault in Our Stars. These clips not only give fans personal insights into his works and the writing process writ large, they also provide unique access to the author, inspiring fans to create their own fan art and make connections with one another. In the twenty-first century, reading and watching videos are related activities that allow people to engage with authors and other readers. Whether they turn to The Fault in Our Stars or titles by lesser-known authors, Nerdfighters are readers. Incorporating thousands of testimonials about what they read and why, Jennifer Burek Pierce not only sheds light on this particular online community, she also reveals what it tells us about the changing nature of reading in the digital age. Novel Writing Prep

by Monica Leonelle, Novel Writing Prep Books available in PDF, EPUB, Mobi Format. Download Novel Writing Prep books, 50,000+ words in 30 days—impossible, right? Or if it is possible, those words must be total crap—right? And even if there is some semblance of writing talent in the draft, writing that fast means the plot and characters must make no sense… right? No. Nope. Wrong! Yes, you can write 50,000 good words on your novel in as little as a month, as long as you prepare yourself. After helping thousands of authors develop the skills to hit huge word counts in a short period of time, I’ve found one thing in common across all authors, at all skill levels, from those who have never written a novel to those who publish professionally… This one thing not only helps writers get their book to make sense (and read well!) on paper, but also helps them write it faster in the first place... And it’s simple: You must know what you are going to write before you write it. That’s it! The results? Most writers can at least double their writing speed (some can triple it), meaning they can do twice as many words in the same time period as they were doing before. Additionally, these writers encounter fewer bouts of writer’s block and are more likely to see their book in print down the line. Novel Writing Prep takes you through a simple, flexible, easy-to-implement outlining process that will give you a skeleton of ideas for completing a marathon writing month. And best of all—you can go through all 30 planning prompts in just a few minutes a day over 30 days, or you can complete a pizza-and-netflix-and-writing binge over a weekend. Doesn’t matter your skill level, your writing experience, or how you prefer to write a first draft. For plotters, pantsers, newbies, veterans, and everyone in between—let Novel Writing Prep help you plan your novel before writing it, so you can write an awesome book faster. Are you ready to go all in and say “yes!” to a fun-filled, exciting, productive adventure in writing? The world needs your book! Grab Novel Writing Prep today and make it happen.

The tumors are no longer growing because of an experimental drug, but she will never fully recover. Hazel is watching television when her mother makes her get up and go to her cancer support group. Hazel dislikes the group, but her mother makes her attend because she thinks she needs to socialize more. She arrives just before the group begins. Isaac, her friend, talks about the surgery he will have a in a few weeks. He had cancer in one eye and that eye was removed. However, the cancer is now in his other eye and he will have to have that eye removed, as well. As added support, Isaac brought his friend, Augustus Waters, to the support group. Augustus, a very good looking young man, is also a cancer survivor. He had osteosarcoma that required the removal of his leg. After support group, Hazel and Augustus wait outside for her mother. Isaac is with his girlfriend, Monica, making out on the far side of the church. Augustus asks Hazel to come to his house to watch V for Vendetta with him. He thinks she looks like Natalie Portman as she was in that movie. However, Hazel refuses when Augustus pops a cigarette into his mouth until he tells her that it is just a metaphor. She finds it so amusing, the irony of putting something that causes cancer into this mouth but not giving it the power to cause cancer, that she agrees to go to his home. Chapter 2 Augustus is a terrible driver because he cannot feel the gas pedal under his fake leg. Hazel makes him admit the only reason he has a driver’s license is because the examiner felt sorry for him. She calls it a Cancer Perk. They share their cancer stories. At Augustus’ house, Hazel meets his parents. Then they go downstairs to his bedroom. Augustus tells Hazel that he used to play basketball, but before he was diagnosed he realized it was pointless, the act of constantly throwing a ball into a basket. Then he asks her what she likes to do. She tells him about her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. He agrees to read it if she will read his favorite book, the Price of Dawn. Augustus and Hazel go into the living room to watch the movie. Hazel thinks the movie is a guy-thing. Augustus drives her home and asks her to call him later. She promises to call when she finishes the book....
